History

James McEwan Snr the founder of our family run firm was born in Perth in 1914.

Following the death of his father and mother at an early age he lived with his uncle Archibald McMartin who ran a funeral business in Perth’s South Street. He started working for his uncle in the family funeral business until the Second World War intervened.

On returning from the war he worked for his uncle for a while until he set up on his own in premises in Charlotte Street, Perth in 1952. He then moved to our current premises in George Street in 1958 where he was joined by his son James.

His son James tragically died at the age of 40, which lead to his daughter Irene and her husband Bill joining the family business in 1973. The business expanded greatly due to Irene and Bill’s hard work and commitment to personal service. Irene and Bill were joined by their sons Billy, Jamie and Andrew in 1985, 1990 and 1998 respectively.

Since 1973 the business has invested greatly in its premises, staff and vehicles reflecting the company’s strive to meet and exceed our client’s expectations. Following the retirement of Irene and Bill in 2008 the business is currently run by Billy, Jamie and Andrew with almost 60 years combined experience in the funeral trade.

James McEwan & Son are extremely proud of their reputation in the local community of providing a caring, dignified and personalised service, their reputation having been built up over the last 69 years.
